About the Tokyo Tower Camera
This camera watches Tokyo Tower in Shiba-koen, Minato ward. It stands 333 metres tall and was completed in 1958, at which point it was the tallest self-supporting steel tower in the world. It was built to consolidate the broadcast transmissions of Tokyo's television stations into a single mast.
The red and white banding is not a design choice. It is an aviation obstruction marking required by law, repainted roughly every five years by hand — during which the tower is wrapped in scaffolding.
The night lighting changes with the season. Autumn and winter use warm orange incandescent lamps, spring and summer a cooler white scheme, and the difference between the two is striking enough that the tower can look like a different structure. Special occasions bring one-off colour schemes.
