About the Tokyo Skytree East View Camera
This camera looks east from Tokyo Skytree in Sumida ward. The tower is 634 metres tall, opened in 2012, and is the tallest structure of its kind in the world — height chosen partly as wordplay, since 6-3-4 can be read musashi, the old name for this region.
Looking east is a different proposition from looking west. There is no high-rise cluster in this direction: the view runs out over the low, flat wards of eastern Tokyo — Katsushika, Edogawa, Adachi — toward the Edo River and the Chiba boundary beyond it.
This is reclaimed and alluvial ground, much of it at or below sea level, which is why the built landscape is so uniformly low-rise and why the flood embankments along the rivers are so prominent. On clear days the view carries a long way across the Kanto plain; the flatness is exactly what makes the distance readable.
