Sapporo City Tram, Chuo Ward Office-mae

About the Sapporo City Tram, Chuo Ward Office-mae Camera

This camera covers the Chuo Ward Office-mae stop on the Sapporo City Tram (Sapporo Shiden), the loop line that circles through downtown Sapporo. It's one of the easiest ways to check road and streetcar conditions in the city center.

The tram has run since 1918 and today forms a full loop connecting Susukino, Nishi 4-chome and several central neighborhoods, popular with both commuters and visitors.

The loop is more recent than the line. For decades the network was a partial route with a gap downtown; that gap was closed in December 2015 with a new section between Nishi 4-chome and Susukino, adding the Tanukikoji stop. The downtown track was built alongside the pavement rather than down the middle of the road, so passengers step on and off directly from the footpath.

Highlights & Nearby

  • Watch for: streetcars passing, road and sidewalk conditions, downtown traffic
  • Nearby: Sapporo City Hall, Odori Park, Tanukikoji shopping arcade
  • Note: visible slush or snow on the tracks usually means slower service across the loop
