Odori Park Sapporo TV Tower, Sapporo

Hokkaido, Japan LIVE --:--:-- JST

About the Odori Park and Sapporo TV Tower Camera

This camera looks along Odori Park in central Sapporo, with the TV Tower at its eastern end. The park is a strip roughly 1.5 kilometres long running east to west through the middle of the city.

It is not a park in the ordinary sense so much as a dividing line. Sapporo was laid out on a grid in the 1870s, and Odori is the axis that separates the north and south address blocks — an address like Kita 3 Nishi 4 is measured from here. The TV Tower, 147 metres and completed in 1957, marks the eastern end.

The park changes function completely with the season. February brings the Snow Festival, with large snow sculptures along the strip and crowds to match; summer turns it into a beer garden; and for much of the rest of the year it is simply where people in the city centre sit outside. Snow cover through the winter transforms how the whole view reads.
