About the Odaiba and Tokyo Bay Camera
This camera looks over Odaiba and Tokyo Bay. Odaiba is reclaimed land, and the name is a clue to its origin: daiba means gun battery, and the islands were built in the 1850s as coastal defences after Perry's fleet arrived in the bay.
For more than a century they served no real purpose. Serious development came only in the late 1980s and 1990s, which is why Odaiba looks nothing like the rest of Tokyo — wide roads, large single-use buildings and open space between them, rather than the dense fine-grained fabric of the older city.
The view takes in the water, Rainbow Bridge and the Minato skyline behind it. Working harbour traffic passes through all day, and after dark the bridge illumination and the office towers across the water become the main event.
