About the Miyanomori, Sapporo Camera
This camera covers Miyanomori, a hillside residential district on Sapporo's western edge that hosted the normal hill ski jump events at the 1972 Winter Olympics. The Miyanomori Ski Jump Stadium still operates today, alongside a museum on the games.
The area sits close to Maruyama Park and the forested slopes leading toward Mt. Moiwa, making it one of the greener, quieter parts of central Sapporo.
Sapporo 1972 were the first Winter Olympics held in Asia, and the normal hill event on this hillside gave Japan its first Winter Games gold medal of any kind. Yukio Kasaya won it, with Akitsugu Konno and Seiji Aochi taking silver and bronze behind him, a clean sweep that no country outside Europe had managed in a Winter Olympic event. The trio are still remembered in Japan as the Hinomaru Hikotai.
