About the Hokkaido Starry Sky Camera Camera
This feed combines views from four all-sky cameras spread across Hokkaido, built to track the night sky rather than a single landmark. Away from Sapporo's lights, rural Hokkaido has some of the darkest skies in Japan.
During the day the cameras mostly show daytime cloud cover; the real draw is after dark, when clear nights reveal stars, the Milky Way in season, and occasionally aurora activity during strong solar storms.
The nights worth setting a reminder for are the major meteor showers, the Perseids around mid-August and the Geminids in mid-December, when inland Hokkaido combines cold, dry air with genuinely dark surroundings. Aurora is the rarer prospect and it is worth adjusting expectations for: at this latitude it shows as a low red glow along the northern horizon during strong geomagnetic storms, not the overhead curtains seen from the Arctic.
