Tanukikoji 8-chome Intersection

This camera looks at the intersection at Tanukikoji 8-chome, west of the covered arcade section. Where the roofed blocks end, the street becomes an ordinary road, and that is what makes this camera useful rather than scenic.

It is framed as a road-conditions camera. In a city that clears snow all winter, the state of the road surface matters: whether it is black asphalt, packed snow, or the polished ice that forms when packed snow gets driven over at low temperatures.

That polished surface is the local hazard. Sapporo residents watch for it, and pedestrians shift to a shorter, flatter stride when it appears. Through summer the same intersection is unremarkable, which is itself a good illustration of how much winter changes the city.
