Ebisu, Shibuya City, Tokyo

Tokyo, Japan LIVE --:--:-- JST

About the Ebisu, Shibuya Camera

This camera covers Ebisu in Shibuya ward, the district between Shibuya and Meguro. It is known for restaurants and bars without the crush of its neighbours, and it consistently ranks near the top of Tokyo desirability surveys.

The name has an unusual origin. In 1887 the Japan Beer Brewery opened a plant here and named its product Yebisu. A freight station was built in 1901 to ship the beer out, took the name of the brand, and the surrounding area eventually took the name of the station. Very few places anywhere are named after a commercial product in that order.

The brewery closed in 1988, and Yebisu Garden Place opened on the site in 1994, connected to the station by a long moving walkway. That development set the tone for what Ebisu became. The streets fill from early evening as people arrive for dinner.
