Yokohama Port and Bay Bridge

Yokohama LIVE --:--:-- JST

About the Yokohama Port and Bay Bridge Camera

This camera looks over Yokohama Port, taking in the Bay Bridge, the Minato Mirai waterfront and the working harbour between them. It is the widest view of the port on the site.

The Bay Bridge is the structure that anchors the frame. It is a cable-stayed span of about 860 metres, opened in 1989, carrying the Shuto Expressway Bayshore Route across the mouth of the harbour. Ships heading for the inner berths pass beneath it, which is what makes this a genuinely active view rather than a static one.

Yokohama has been a working port since 1859, when it was opened to foreign trade and a fishing village became Japan's window on the outside world. That history is still legible in the layout: container terminals and the Osanbashi passenger pier operate within sight of the tourist waterfront rather than being pushed out of view.
