About the Tateyama Murodo Camera
This camera, operated by the broadcaster Tulip TV, looks over Murodo on the Tateyama range in Toyama. At around 2,450 metres it is the highest point on the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route and one of the highest live cameras in Japan.
Murodo receives some of the heaviest snowfall recorded anywhere in the world. When the route reopens in April, crews cut a passage through the accumulated drifts and the walls on either side can stand close to twenty metres — the Yuki-no-Otani snow corridor. Watching the depth fall away through the season is the most striking thing this camera shows.
The route closes entirely through winter, roughly December to mid-April, so for several months the camera shows an empty, buried plateau. In the open season the frame takes in Mikurigaike pond, the surrounding peaks and weather that can change within minutes at this altitude.
