Shinonome — Bayshore Route and Rinkai Line
About the Shinonome — Bayshore Route and Rinkai Line Camera
Shinonome is reclaimed land in Koto ward, between Toyosu and the Ariake exhibition district. This camera frames three transport layers at once: the Shuto Expressway Bayshore Route, the Rinkai Line, and Shinonome Station below.
The Bayshore Route is the outer ring along Tokyo Bay and carries a heavy share of the freight moving between the port, Haneda and the eastern suburbs. It is one of the more congestion-prone stretches of the network, so the traffic on screen is a reasonable proxy for how the bay side is flowing.
The neighbourhood itself is recent. Shinonome was warehousing and light industry until the 2000s, when high-rise housing went up and the population climbed quickly. Watching the tower blocks against the expressway is a compact picture of how Tokyo's waterfront has been rebuilt.
