About the Peace Memorial Park Camera
This camera looks over Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park in Naka ward. The ground it occupies was the Nakajima district, the commercial centre of the city, until it was destroyed by the atomic bombing on 6 August 1945.
Rather than rebuild the district, the city set the land aside as a memorial. The park was laid out to a design by Kenzo Tange and opened in 1954, arranged along a single axis: the museum at one end, then the cenotaph, then the Flame of Peace, and beyond the river the skeletal remains of the Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall — the A-Bomb Dome, left standing as it was and now a World Heritage Site.
It functions as an ordinary public park for much of the year, with people crossing it on their way through the city. On 6 August the memorial ceremony is held here, and in the evening paper lanterns are floated on the Motoyasu River.
