About the Dotonbori Camera

This camera covers Dotonbori in Chuo ward, the heart of Osaka's Minami district. Restaurants and outsized illuminated signs crowd both banks of the canal, and it draws bigger crowds than anywhere else in the city.

The canal is artificial. Yasui Doton began cutting it in 1612, funding the work himself, and both the waterway and the district took his name. Through the Edo period the south bank was Osaka's theatre quarter, lined with playhouses — the entertainment character of the street today runs in a direct line from that.

The canal and the signage are what make the view. Ebisubashi is where people stop to meet and take photographs, so foot traffic slows there and density builds through the evening. After dark the signs reflect off the water, which is the image most people picture when they think of Osaka.
