This camera is operated by Naritasan Shinshoji itself and looks over the temple precincts in Narita, Chiba. It is one of the few cameras on the site run directly by the site it shows.
Shinshoji was founded in 940 and is among the most visited temples in Japan, drawing around three million people over the New Year period alone. The grounds are large and layered — the Great Main Hall, the three-storey pagoda, the Shotoku Taishi hall and a substantial park behind them.
It is a working temple rather than a monument. Goma fire rituals are conducted in the main hall several times a day, and the approach from Narita Station is lined with eel restaurants that have served pilgrims for generations. The airport is close enough that the temple is a common first or last stop in Japan for travellers with time between flights.
