Minatomirai, Yokohama

Yokohama, Japan LIVE --:--:-- JST

About the Minato Mirai Camera

This camera looks over Minato Mirai, the waterfront district of Yokohama. The name translates as harbour of the future, which tells you when it was conceived — the plan dates from the 1980s, on land freed up when shipyards and rail yards were cleared.

The skyline here is deliberate in a way Tokyo's is not. Because the district was master-planned rather than accreted, the towers step down toward the water in a composed arrangement, with the 296-metre Landmark Tower at the high point. The Cosmo Clock 21 wheel on the waterfront doubles as a working clock.

It is at its best after dark. The office towers, the wheel and the illuminated brick warehouses along the water combine into a night view that Yokohama actively markets, and the contrast with the working port operating alongside it is part of the appeal.

  • Note: the district is designed around its night view — the wheel and towers light after dark
