About the Lake Suwa and Mount Fuji Camera
Operated by Shimosuwa's tourism association, this camera looks from the northern shore of Lake Suwa down the length of the water — and, when conditions allow, to Mount Fuji on the far horizon.
Fuji is around 100 kilometres away and appears through a notch in the hills at the southeastern end of the lake. It is a demanding view: the mountain shows only when the air is exceptionally clear, which in practice means cold, dry winter mornings. Summer haze hides it for months at a time.
Shimosuwa itself is worth knowing. It was a post town where the Nakasendo and the Koshu Kaido met, the only place the two highways joined, and it holds the lower shrines of Suwa Taisha. The hot springs here have been in use since long before either road was formalised.
