Lake Kawaguchiko

Yamanashi, Japan LIVE --:--:-- JST

About the Lake Kawaguchiko Camera

This camera looks over Lake Kawaguchiko in Fujikawaguchiko, Yamanashi — the most accessible of the Fuji Five Lakes and, for most visitors, the standard place to see Mount Fuji from.

The lake sits at roughly 830 metres, on the northern side of the mountain. When the surface is calm, usually early on a still morning, Fuji reflects in the water clearly enough to be worth waiting for; the reflection has its own name in Japanese, sakasa-Fuji, the upside-down Fuji.

Whether the mountain is visible at all is another matter. Cloud forms readily around a peak that size, and the summer months in particular can hide it for days at a time. Autumn and winter are far more reliable, and the cold clear mornings from November through February are the best odds you will get.

Highlights & Nearby

  • Watch for: Mount Fuji above the lake, the reflection on calm mornings, cloud forming around the peak
  • Nearby: Kawaguchiko Station, Mount Tenjo ropeway, Oishi Park, the other Fuji Five Lakes
  • Note: Fuji is most reliably visible November to February; summer cloud often hides it
