About the Komachi Street, Kamakura Camera
This camera covers Komachi-dori in Kamakura, the narrow shopping street running roughly 360 metres from the east exit of Kamakura Station toward Tsurugaoka Hachimangu. Food stalls, sweet shops and craft stores are packed tightly along both sides.
Kamakura was the seat of the shogunate from 1185 to 1333. The formal approach to Tsurugaoka Hachimangu is Wakamiya-oji, the broad avenue one street to the east; Komachi-dori runs parallel to it and is far narrower, which concentrates both the shops and the people.
That makes this a practical camera rather than a scenic one. Crowding varies enormously — a weekday morning is easy going, while weekend and holiday afternoons can slow the street to a shuffle. Cherry blossom season, the hydrangea weeks in June and the New Year shrine visits are the heaviest periods of all.
