Kokusai-dori at Makishi Koban-mae

This fixed camera looks along Kokusai-dori from outside the Makishi police box, which is the busiest stretch of Naha's main shopping street and the point most people use to arrange to meet. It is one of several fixed cameras the operator runs around this junction.

Kokusai-dori runs roughly 1.6 kilometres and is nicknamed the Miracle Mile, for the speed with which this strip rebuilt itself after the war. The street name itself comes from the Ernie Pyle International Theatre, a cinema that once stood along it. Behind the shopfronts lie the covered market arcades, with the Makishi Public Market at their centre - opened in 1950, rebuilt in 1972, and rebuilt again for a 2023 reopening.

Crowd level is the main thing this camera reports, and it swings hard. Mornings are quiet, the street fills from mid-afternoon, and evening is busiest. The other use is weather: Okinawa gets sudden heavy rain, and a street of raised umbrellas here is a reliable sign it has already started rather than being forecast.
