About the Kamikochi Kappa Bridge Camera
This camera looks out from Kappa Bridge, the suspension footbridge over the Azusa River that sits at the centre of Kamikochi in Matsumoto, Nagano. At roughly 1,500 metres, the valley is the main gateway into the Northern Japan Alps, with the Hotaka range filling the view ahead and Mount Yake behind.
The valley floor is unusually flat for high mountain country, and there is a reason for that. Eruptions of Mount Yake dammed the Azusa River and formed a lake, which then silted up. Taisho Pond, created by the 1915 eruption, is the most recent visible stage of that same process.
Kamikochi is not open year-round. It normally closes in mid-November and reopens in mid-April, and even in season private cars are barred — access is by bus or taxi only. Those restrictions are the reason the valley still looks the way it does.
