Hiraoka Shrine

About the Hiraoka Shrine Camera

This camera is run by Hiraoka Shrine itself and looks over its precincts in Higashiosaka, on the eastern edge of the Osaka plain at the foot of the Ikoma mountains.

The shrine is old — it is listed in the Engishiki, the tenth-century register of official shrines, and local tradition places its founding far earlier than that. It served as the ichinomiya, the highest-ranked shrine, of the former Kawachi Province.

Its best-known feature is the deer. A small herd is kept in the grounds, a connection to Kasuga Taisha in Nara with which the shrine shares enshrined deities. The hillside setting also makes it a local autumn colour spot, and the plum grove flowers in late winter before the cherry season begins.
